The New 2011 Mustang Looks Good in Eco-Green
By David Johns
Is the new Mustang a perfect blend of power and fuel economy? The muscle cars of the 60's were just flat out cool. Even my most environmentally sensitive, trash composting, endangered species saving friends have to admit there was a certain aura... a brutish appeal to those pavement pounding machines. But let's face it, the words "eco-friendly" were never paired to those gas inhaling big block motors. But Ford has come a long way since the 60's. The all new 2010 Mustang for sale is the first production car in history to offer over 300 horsepower and over 30 miles per gallon. This is no small feat to combine all of this in a package as exciting as the Mustang. I know there are those that will trip over themselves to point out that their Honda Civic gets 40 mpg or their Prius gets 45+. But that's missing the point. Those cars are not the Mustang. They have neither the style, thrill or flair that the Mustang does. Oh... and they don't come close to 300 horse power. But the real point is that they shouldn't be compared at all. Each of those cars has it's place and serves it's purpose. Clearly if your primary consideration in a car is it's gas mileage then you won't be stopping by the local Ford dealership to drool over the Mustangs for sale. Well, maybe you'll drool, but you won't be driving one home. :) But for those who are looking for aggressive style, power and performance the great mileage of the 2011 Mustang is really icing on the cake. And why can't you have your cake and eat it too? These impressive numbers are based on a completely redesigned V6 power plant. The 3.7 liter, all aluminum engine is a drastic change from the earlier 4.0 liter cast iron block. It's more powerful and weighs less, helping squeak out those extra few miles per gallon. A key feature is the dual independent variable valve timing... OK, did your eyes just glaze over that technical jargon? Yeah, mine too. Basically what it means is this new generation of engine is smarter than the last, which was smarter than the one before it. These constant improvements in efficiency, materials and production technology will only lead to more impressive numbers in the future. The other surprising twist is the 31 mile per gallon number came from an automatic transmission. Traditionally a cars published MPG numbers were based on it having a manual transmission, and one that was driven with absolute perfect shift points. That's because stick shifts have fewer moving parts and less friction than automatics. But since most new cars are sold with automatics, that ideal number wasn't at all realistic. Yet with the Mustang that impressive mileage is much closer to a real world number. As long as you keep the go pedal off the floor the 6 speed automatic should keep you driving past gas stations instead of pulling into them. But of course, driving a car as fun as the 300 horsepower Mustang will challenge even the most frugal driver to keep his foot off the accelerator pedal! |

Now, there's a good looking car! Love it! I wish that I still had my 1967 mustang. It was definitely a gas guzzler but, it was beautiful! Thanks for letting us know what's on the Ford market.
