Photos from a day in Maui
By David Johns
I'm going to take a break from my normal automotive intel to share some photos I took today of gorgeous Maui, Hawaii. I'm here on business, not pleasure unfortunately. But even if I'm stuck indoors for a big chunk of the day I'm certainly not complaining. It beats a convention in Omaha any day (no offense to you Nebraskans!) All the islands of Hawaii are incredible, but my favorite so far is Maui. It's the most relaxed and enjoyable of the islands I've been to. It certainly has its share of development, but its not overpowering like Oahu's famous Waikiki area. Even though Maui is the second largest island of the Hawaiian chain, it's still pretty small to those of us from the "main land". At 729 square miles it's about half the size of Rhode Island. Yet even at this small scale there's a great diversity of climates and scenery. There are superb white sand beaches (of course!) and lush vegetation, but also a dry side to the island with a much different feel and look. Then there's Haleakala, which is the largest dormant volcano in the world. The barren black lava fields at its peak are polar opposites to the rain forests on the windward face of the island. I've got some great shots of Haleakala and will write a separate intel on it. I hope you enjoy the photos! If so I'll post more in future intels.

Amazing rainbows are a daily ocurrance on Maui

Moon through the palms on a very crisp Maui morning

"Sand Monster" found on an early morning beach walk. Looks a little like Shrek according to my cco-worker's 5 yr old son

Great sunset off the north shore

Stunning sunset as seen from Lahaina

It's hard to stop yourself from taking more sunset photos than you know what to do with!

Chartres Labyrinth on Nakalele Point, Maui

Another rainbow shot with the neighboring island of Moloka'i in the background

View down the pristine beach at Napili

The lava cliffs off Nakalele Point

Paddle boarding. This lady was WAY out to sea. This was taken with a 15x zoom lense at full zoom!

Turtles are easy to spot, but hard to get photos of!

More lava cliffs, but these are near Kapalua.

The constant wind and churning sea carve out some great lava formations.

Closeup of the voids left in lava rock from the air pockets as the molten rocked cooled.

Great pictures! Some of those could have been taken on Ibiza but that island is only 9 miles across at the widest point.
David, you have just given me the urge to go back to Maui. We spent 1 month there a couple of years ago. It is a wonderful place to holiday! Thank you for posting the photos.
Thanks for sharing your photos of Maui. I visited there several years ago. Ive forgotten how beautiful the island and scenery was. I'll be following you and look forward to future intels. Gina
