Photos from a day in Maui

By David Johns

I'm going to take a break from my normal automotive intel to share some photos I took today of gorgeous Maui, Hawaii. I'm here on business, not pleasure unfortunately. But even if I'm stuck indoors for a big chunk of the day I'm certainly not complaining. It beats a convention in Omaha any day (no offense to you Nebraskans!)

All the islands of Hawaii are incredible, but my favorite so far is Maui. It's the most relaxed and enjoyable of the islands I've been to. It certainly has its share of development, but its not overpowering like Oahu's famous Waikiki area. Even though Maui is the second largest island of the Hawaiian chain, it's still pretty small to those of us from the "main land". At 729 square miles it's about half the size of Rhode Island.

Yet even at this small scale there's a great diversity of climates and scenery. There are superb white sand beaches (of course!) and lush vegetation, but also a dry side to the island with a much different feel and look. Then there's Haleakala, which is the largest dormant volcano in the world. The barren black lava fields at its peak are polar opposites to the rain forests on the windward face of the island. I've got some great shots of Haleakala and will write a separate intel on it.

I hope you enjoy the photos! If so I'll post more in future intels.

Great pictures! Some of those could have been taken on Ibiza but that island is only 9 miles across at the widest point.

David, you have just given me the urge to go back to Maui. We spent 1 month there a couple of years ago. It is a wonderful place to holiday! Thank you for posting the photos.
