Parent: What do you say?

If you have kids are any of these familiar conversations in your house? Parent: Do you want some more milk?
Kid: No.
Parent: No, what?
Kid: No thanks. Parent: What do you say?
Kid: Thank you. Parent: What do you say?
Kid: Yes please. (at dinner table)
Parent: Take bites please.
Kid: ...
Parent: Fork, not hands!
Kid: ...
Parent: Lean over you plate please.
Kid: ...
Parent: Use your napkin please.
Kid: ...
Parent: Bottom in your seat.
Kid: ... So can I look forward to this routine ever ending? When they're 18 will I still be reminding them to say "please" and "thank you"? That's it. I just wanted to rant! :) Well, perhaps there is hope after all. This conversation happened last night at dinner. Waiter gives my kid a balloon leaving the restaurant.
Kid: Thank you!
Parent: What do you... Oh, you did say it. Good job! |

Ahhh. Table manners - how quaint. Did you realise that by teaching your children something that is probably alien to their peers that you are creating all sorts of problems for them in the future when they try to socialise? The kid that says "Gimme that!" and grabs what it wants will be way ahead of the child who says "Please may I have. . . . . .?" and waits politely for an answer. What sad times we live in.
What a grim society is out there.
How can parents possibly do right?

Ha! You're probably right, which is both sad and funny at the same time. Hopefully I can also teach my kids that there's more to life than getting ahead... like integrity. Thanks for the comment Coot!
