1966-1977 Early Bronco trim packages - Sport, Ranger, Explorer
By John D. David of EarlyBroncoAds.com
Ford's original SUV, the 1966-1977 Ford Bronco had (and still has) a large following. For 11 years the Bronco was virtually unchanged keeping the same body style and only minimal engine and transmission choices. However in that 11 years there were a few special trim packages; Sport, Ranger and Explorer. These packages can get confusing, partly because of the age of the vehicles and partly because they could overlapped each other (ie. you could order a Sport Explorer) This article is intended to clear up some misconceptions about these packages. Bronco Sport - The Sport package began in 1967 and was basically a chrome exterior trip upgrade. Exterior upgrades included: - Chrome trim around the window and windshield frames - Chrome metal moldings at the drip rails - Chrome grille molding - Chrome light bezels (headlights, turn signals, tail lights) - Chrome tail gate handle - "Sport Bronco" emblems on the fenders - Gray painted grille with chrome F.O.R.D letters - Chrome front and rear bumpers w/ guards - Chrome wheel covers. Interior upgrades included: - Vinyl door trim panels with chrome moldings - Headliner with chrome trim - Floor mats with chrome trim - Chrome cigar lighter - Steering wheel with wood grain horn pad and horn ring Bronco Ranger - The Ranger package began in 1972 and was basically an upgrade to the Sport. It included all the Sport items listed above plus the following: Exterior upgrades included: - Body & hood stripes in white with orange accents - Spare tire carrier and spare tire cover with Bronco logo Interior upgrades included: - Full color matched carpeting - Color matched vinyl door trim panels w/ wood grain accents - Rear wheel-well covers in vinyl - Vinyl seats w/ cloth inserts in "Houndstooth" pattern Bronco Explorer - The Explorer package began in 1972. Exterior upgrades included: - Choice of 2 special paint colors; Copper Metallic or Blue Metallic - Chrome wheel covers - Spare tire carrier - Spare tire cover with "Explorer" text. Interior upgrades included: - Color matched vinyl door trim panels w/ wood grain accents - Vinyl seats w/ striped pattern cloth inserts - Color matched floor mats and "Explorer" emblem on glove box

Contributor's Note
This article relates to my most enjoyable hobby of wrenching on muscle cars and 4x4's. I've owned over a dozen classic Mustangs, Cougars, GTO's and Mopars. I've even restored a few of them! (although many are still on the to-do list) Speaking of which, I'd better get off the computer and into the garage. Cheers!
